Although there will soon be ghosts and goblins aplenty with Halloween around the corner, for some people there is an even scarier prospect—an appointment with the dentist. Every year, millions of otherwise brave Americans delay or even ignore the dental treatment they need because they are genuinely fearful of seeing the dentist. For some, the reason may be an early childhood memory that is unpleasant. For others, the fear may be based in the sights and sounds in a dentist’s office. No matter what keeps you from seeing the dentist as often as you need, Dr. David Banda and his team can calm your nerves with sedation dentistry.

Does the idea of going to the dentist fill you with fear and send chills down your spine? If the answer is yes, then you are not alone. Thousands of Americans feel an overbearing sense of dread when they make a dental appointment. The thought of having strange tools clean their teeth and gums is enough to cause an incredible amount of anxiety and stress. There is a solution for the anxiety and a way to relieve the stress. Cranbrook Dental Care, located in Bloomfield Hills, MI, offers methods of sedation, which provides a comfortable experience for those who usually experience fright.
A Relaxing Experience
Sedation dentistry is the best way to overcome any anxiety experienced during a dental appointment. Dr. Banda, a masterful dentist with years of experience, and his phenomenal team of seasoned experts, want to ensure that every patient, both new and returning, has a comfortable experience. We understand that our tools may seem alien and the procedures can induce stress, but our sedation techniques can remove the fear from the equation. We will simply give you a treatment to either relax your mind and body. In some cases, our sedation can cause patients to sleep, so they wake after the procedure is over. It makes the whole process very straightforward.
Types of Sedation
We offer two types of sedation. Both will alleviate anxiety, but we can apply one or the other, depending on a patient’s preferences. Our sedation types include the following:
- Oral Conscious Sedation: Our doctors can prescribe an anxiolytic, or anti-anxiety, medication. One to two hours before your dental appointment, you will take the pill, so its effects start to take hold before you enter our office. During the procedure, we will also apply nitrous oxide, increasing the effect of the medication. We suggest having someone drive you to and from the appointment if you undergo oral conscious sedation.
- IV Sedation: While this type is usually used for oral surgeries or longer procedures, this type of sedation can alleviate more severe cases of stress and anxiety. We will apply medication via an IV drip, which will cause a state of relaxation, or sleep, within minutes. Again, we suggest having a ride prepared for your appointment.

Something that many people have in common is a fear. Whether it is a fear of snakes or flying, may people live with so many different fears, and it may affect the way they live their daily lives. For some the fear may be slight, but for others, it can be crippling. A fear that many people have in common is a fear of the dentist. Because of this fear, people may delay the much needed dental work they need performed, causing them to live their lives with a deteriorating mouth. Though you may feel as though there is nothing you can do to get over your fear, Dr. Banda is able to help. Aside from our patients who have a fear of the dentist, sedation dentistry is also able to help those who suffer from TMJ and people who find it difficult to keep their mouths open for extended periods of time. One form of sedation we offer our patients is IV sedation. With this, we will sit down and talk to you, evaluating your anxiety level. This is a very personalized form of sedation, allowing us to administer just the right amount to ensure your absolute comfort. You will receive the sedation intravenously, and you will feel extreme relaxation and absolutely no pain during your dental work. Our doctors will be able to perform your dental work with ease while you sit and rest.
The other form of sedation we offer is oral conscious sedation. This involves taking a prescribed pill or drinking a liquid medication before your appointment. Again, you will be able to unwind while your dental work is being performed, and you will not feel any pain. With both forms of sedation, your vital signs, such as your breathing and heart rate, will be monitored, making sure everything is going smoothly. Another important thing to remember is that you will need a trusted loved one to bring you home after your dental appointment, as the effects of the sedation will still be in your system.
